The odd end to a week

This has been a strange week. Monday started out full and busy, it is very busy the first two weeks of the month. Some people pay rent on time, some late, some say they paid rent on time, but it's late. Owners get paid, Vendors get paid, HOAs get paid and mortagages get paid. All that happens during the first two weeks. We also get 30 day notices that require attention, put out 3 day notices and when folks pay rent, they put in a boat load of maintenance requests. Add to that, all the day to day administrative stuff that needs attention and the week can be full of chaos. By the end of the week, things were looking good. All things were going well, details were ironed out and appointments have been made and kept (very important!) and we can ease into the weekend.

Today started like any other Friday. It's casual day so we don't have to look like a million, we can look like a thousand, instead.  Fridays we tend to close up early and go home around 4:00. We schedule all key returns for 3:30 and put all lease signings early in the afternoon or mornings. It's basically wind down day and clean up the pieces. I scheduled an inspection for the morning to get any work done for this particular apartment before the next tenant moved in on Monday. This inspection took longer than usual, I met with the tenant and owner. I spent some time with the owner to assure her that all is well in her condo (not apartment) and she followed me around during the inspection. This is not usual, but she is canceling her management contract and wants to manage it on her own, so she wanted to know everything I was inspecting, who I would call, how would I go about determining who's costs are who's. It was a long morning, but I liked the owner and it was worth it.

When I back got to the office, things were very odd. Eyes were darting around the area, heads were together and I felt like I was stepping into the twilight zone. Did I have something on my clothes that didn't belong there? Had my face taken on a new and strange look? Was a co-worker getting the boot? Was I getting the boot and the last to find out? A million things were going through my mind. So I did just what anyone would do, I asked the question, "is everything alright?". I got the answer I thought I would never get. "No, Wendy was terminated", was the answer I got. Wendy is my boss. She's fun, good at her job, a teacher and looks for the good in all. She's fair, tough and pays attention to details. Working for her and with her is full of excitment and learning about the un-knowns. She will walk you through a problem and I've learned how to come to the answer myself. So loosing her as a boss is HARD. And not just for me, we all have been hired by her and we all have a personal relationship with her as well as a professional relationship. Man, this is going to be hard.

On Monday we, who are left in the department, have a meeting with the powers that be to determine the direction we are all going. Hope we are all still employed. It will be my 90th day, the day I get benefits.
