Yesterday I tried to get into the Railroad museum, but they were closed. In fact, there's really not a lot happening in this community. The small towns have become satellite communities and the downtown areas are no longer a thriving part of life. I did find the historic downtown area of Duluth, and it was very pretty. I went to the park, saw the city hall, and some of the stores, a very old church who's bricks were not the same size anywhere on it, and really enjoyed that trip. The city park was beautiful, small enough to see the entire old part of town from. The only trees in the park were almond trees, and there were almonds scattered all over the ground. I was hoping for a hot side walk and I would have cracked open a few and toasted them on the spot. I then found the grave yard. Yep, that would be me, walking on your great-great, and probably greater yet descendents. I found the grave of the town's founder, born in early 1800's. It was sort of creepy but I dig the history behind the gravestone. I was hoping to find some civil war stones, but there were none that I could find.
Another fact is, everything is built from red brick. Everything. I live with stucco, and to see so much brick makes me wince. It is so expensive to use brick in San Diego, and here it is a major employer. Brick is so pretty and neat looking. Very refined and stately. I like the look.
I did find the Walmart. Enough said there. Oh, and one thing I find a lot of is the Waffle House. I was told by more than one to eat there, but I still can't figure out if I am suppose to be eating dinner, supper, breakfast or lunch since the time change has completely screwed with my taste buds.
I am surprised I haven't seen a White Castle. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough. I have to say, the hotel serves a darn good breakfast, and I have a friend who would find this repulsive, but they serve cottage cheese. Yep, pacnorwestern friend, cottage cheese. I ate some in honor of you. It was very good. However, I was a bit disappointed, no grits yet.
I need to get pictures posted, but I have to download them first, and right now I don't want to waste time doing that. The weather has been very good, not too hot. The bestest thing so far is the green landscape. I can not believe how green it is! There are ponds, streams and the Chattahoochee River nearby and there is nothing that isn't green. There is natural green grass the grows up to the edge of the highways and streets. Coming from and dry and barren land, this is nearly heaven!
All that to say, I miss my home and the Girl, Stick Dog, Smelly Kat, and the Loud Never to Die Birds. But I will take advantage of all that is here that I can find to take. I am sitting by the pond as I type and all I can say is, "what a pleasure this is".
