These are Thankful times

I love the holidays. There's not anything like cooking and setting tables with fine china and pretty bowls of food. I like to have family around. I have a small family, so family around usually fits at my table. This year, though, there were just us three for dinner. I made a smaller turkey than usual but all the other "stuff" was the usual. We like the left overs, even if they are sorta long on the tooth. We have to have the traditional "after Thanksgiving day" sandwich. If you are not sure how to make this sandwich, it goes like this:
1.Take two pieces of bread and spread Best Foods mayo on both sides.
2. On the left piece place some leftover turkey (I prefer the dark meat)
3. On top of the turkey, put on the jellied (not full fruit) cranberry sauce
4. On the right piece of bread, put on some stuffing
Carefully put the pieces together and cut in half. DO NOT SHARE this sandwich.
This is the only way I will eat cranberry sauce. Otherwise it can sit there and grow mold. But eating this sandwich is a requirement to making it to Christmas. The Girl forgot to make her one before she left. I'll try to save her some sandwich makings, but it may be a bit difficult.

Grandma was doing well today. We took up some dinner to her, and some pie! We got the house cleaned and did some yard work. No shopping today, she has plenty. She looks so much better, in fact the in home care will cease after this week. That's a bummer since I think the stimulation of having so many people over helped with the healing. Plus we've been up a lot so she's feeling really good. Hopefully she will be able to start doing the laundry. She will never be able to do the vacuuming or the scouring. She can't handle the smell of cleaners, so to clean her bathroom like it should be, she can't do it. I run the vent fan when I clean so that she isn't overwhelmed by the fumes. But, now there is more reason to understand why it was in the condition it was in. She's tried to clean with baking soda and vinegar in the past, and it just wasn't going to work. I hope I can get to where she can change her bed  and I can go up every other week to do the cleaning. Hopefully she will also be able to drive and get her shopping done. It would be so much more helpful. Not that I begrudge her, but 100 miles round trip and 2 hrs of traveling time make the trip a day trip. Nothing can be done quickly so that you can finish your day in a timely fashion.

I got the prettiest flower arrangement from a vendor this week. It was so thoughtful and I was touched. I have spent some time investing in our vendors to keep a good communication going. I was glad that it looks like we've been successful. That made me happy.

Thanksgiving was a good day for us. Lots to think about. I found that there were 102 colonists and 52 died the first winter.I probably new that at some time, but in my menopausal mind, I have forgotten. Those were bad days, I read that in one family only the baby survived. I can only imagine how grateful they were that the local Indians helped them put in a crop and have a successful harvest. It wasn't all that we enjoy on our table, but it was a promise of life, at least for a while longer. At least until the next ship arrived with more passengers and no provisions. More bad winter ahead, but no deaths. I am thankful for their perseverance and their faith.
