Did you hear that?

It was on Monday morning that I didn't hear "that" sound that I like to hear when I unlock the door on my car. It's a definite "click" of the automatic door locks. My fob was replace a couple of  months ago and I look forward  to being able to unlock my car from far away, or pop the trunk with my hands full of stuff. So when I pushed the button Monday morning for the locks, I heard...the weakest "click" ever. Only one, not the set of two. So I got in the car, was a bit miffed because I really didn't want to have to buy another fob, only to put the key in the ignition and hear...nothing. Not a "click, tick, ping" or "buzz". Um I am suppose to be driving down the road to week three of my job, and there's nothing running. Knowing full well that I have to get to work, and Naomi is getting ready to head off to school, I beg a ride from her, wake up a sleeping husband with the words every husband wants to hear, "my car is dead, I have to go to work, call me when you know what's wrong with it". With those parting words, off we dash. The Girl still has to get to school and get a parking spot and drop me off at work. Oh, and in the afternoon she has to dash to State to see about crashing a class to cross enroll and I planned to drop her off in the early afternoon and pick her up after work. Parking at State on the first day is not going to happen. And the morning starts off with a dead car...

Then the morning only progresses to worse. I get to work in plenty of time, the Girl gets to school an gets a parking spot in time, and my boss asks me to meet one of my co-workers at one of the properties later in the morning. I have to tell her I don't have a car. She gives me the "LOOK". Yep, my job requires a car, and she asks me if this is going to be a problem. I told her no, it's not like I planned my breakdown on Monday, this just happened. So we let it go. The afternoon comes, the Girl calls me and tells me she's downstairs and ready to go, so I take my lunch half hour and dash her to State and back in 30 minutes. Ah, things are looking better, the Husband calls and says it was the battery and the car is back on the road. I picked up the Girl and it looks probable she will get in the class. Okay, things are better, Tuesday will swing me back to normal.

Tuesday comes, I run out to the car to go to work, I hear the "click" of the door lock, and I start it up and off I go! Yes!!!! I get to work and one of my co-workers and I have to do an inspection at a house in nasty town. Off we go in my new batteried car and we get there and it's a mess. We step out of the car, I have a wad of keys, clip board and my phone in my hand and shut the door, and the co-worker says "uh oh". I knew, just knew, I had just locked my keys in the car....call the Husband and ask him to come and unlock my car, in the mean time we will do the inspection. But, alas, the tenant shows up, who had just handed in her keys the day before. We went inside and the house was awful! She told me she wasn't finished moving...um why did you hand in your keys? She told me she didn't need keys, she just took the lock off the garage door and went in. Okay, so why did she bring the keys in? Don't know. Finally the Husband shows up and unlocks my car and back to the office we go. Holy cow, Batman! I finished my day at work, and was so ready to go home. By the way, I will not lock the door with my finger again. I will use the fob.

Now, we move to Wednesday. And guess what? Nothing untoward happened!!! What an elated feeling. Thursday comes and again a wonderful day. Stacey had a baby boy around noon. We are all learning to do a part of her job. I am excited for her. A new baby. I can't wait for her to be able to bring the little boy in. I wonder if she will let me hold him. Now it's Friday, and I go back to nasty town to do that same inspection without the tenant there, I hoped. Everyone was gone, but there was still a toothbrush and toothpaste in the downstairs bathroom. Creepy. It wasn't a bad house, just a bad part of town. And it had really red carpet! All through the house! One bedroom was painted yellow and had the red carpet. I don't know what they were thinking when they carpeted that house. RED! Best of all, I didn't lock my keys in the car. I will grow up and be responsible.

Also on Friday, the Girl got her add code for the class at State, so she will be at State 3 days a week, and at Mesa 4 days a week. These experiences of making decisions has caused a maturity that is unbelievable in the Girl. I may have to refer to her as the Other Woman in this House. So often, as a mom, these decisions and the pursuing the goal was done with me or by me. I can't do this for her, and she's proven she doesn't need me to. It's definitely a bitter-sweet time. How exciting these days can be. Must be time to get a licence plate frame and a "proud parent of a State student" sticker. I would proudly display that.

So the week is over, and the drama has subsided. A new baby, a new battery and all is well in my world.

As a post script, I will say that had my dad not died, he and my mom would have celebrated their 60th anniversary the 30th of August. I miss him very much. I leave this post with a picture of them when my mom was probably 5 or 6 month pregnant with my oldest sister. My dad would have been about 22 or 23 and my mom would be around 17. Isn't he handsome? And mom is a looker, too.
