Adjusting the Calendar

I just blew off the whole month of August. This summer has been soooo busy and by the end of the day, I am bushed. Not to mention my hands are tired of the keyboard and my ear is like so sore from the words that enter into them and are relayed to my brain. I have not been able to enjoy a book or a phone call at all of any personal value.

Some of the events of  property management just make me shake my head, purse my lips and squint my eyes. Just this morning, I had to nearly beg an owner to let me send out an electrician to his rental property. There is a breaker that is toasted, and it runs the a/c as well as the laundry room and other portions of the house. Oh, and we are in the midst of the heat wave we all knew was coming. Really. I don't understand what the meaning of this is, but did he not understand that the house could have had a fire? Then there is the one tenant who locked his bicycle to the bars of the complex, nearly under the sign that says not to attach bikes to the bars, and now he says someone used tools to remove and steal his bike. Umm, no, the HOA has removed it so I gave him the HOA number to call them and see if they still have it. Then there is the story about the young female students who rent a house and have a boat in the drive way. I got a call from one of them and they told me that the Board of Health was at the door requesting to look in the garage. They informed the tenant that there was a concern with the neighbors that the girls were harboring illegal fish in the garage. The tenant said No, good for her, and then she called me.

This month has been a bee sucking month, as well. 2 of our homes had swarms and nothing will stop a person in there tracks more than animal life or insect life. We use a company that does not kill them, so it's a gentle sucking and then a release. I am not a fan of bees, but I have not been fearful. But, don't let me see a roach! We had one house so infested that they would fall from the front door frame when you walked in. Both the owner and I nearly lost our composure, and well as some dignity, when he opened the door. The owner was not happy with the property manager and after a couple of weeks of negotiation the owner fired us. I don't blame him, at all. I cannot tell how horrid the place was, but it was 9K to get it up to snuff. That did include a tenting for bugs and termites, but WOW!

Adding to the usual busy-ness of the summer, the boss put both of his houses on the market to sell. One went fast, one not so fast. Lots of work needed to be done, so while scheduling regular work, we needed to work around this one, and the boss kept changing things around. I couldn't keep up with his changes, and he would make them over night. One day he calls and wants interior painting the next day while they are doing exterior painting. It was a fiasco. All of the work done on this property was done mostly backward. The last I heard, the boss had just put in a new vanity in the bathroom and now wants flooring down. You know what I am talking about, so the vanity has to come back out, as well as the toilet and claw foot tub. The plumbing will need to be disconnected and reconnected. Oh, and today, Aug 30 is staging day. Wonder what happened. It became more than I could schedule.

Okay, so that is what summer is like in personal property management. Things should settle down soon. Just got an email from a pm who asked for cleaners today. Has a tenant moving in tomorrow. I told them all that a flip will not work and yet they send me that sort of stuff. Grrr....

Last on the gripe list, the boss leaves in a week for a vacay in Bali. Not sure how I feel about that.
